Cucurbit viruses are the most important of causal agents in cucurbit production as like as:cucumber (Cucumis sativus L.), melon (C. melo L.), squash (Cucurbita pepo L., C. moschata D. and C. maxima D.), and watermelon (Citrullus lanatus Thunb.), and caused high yield losses up to 90%. In recent years yellowing, mosaic, leaf curling symptoms was observed in cucurbit cultivation areas in the world and Iran. Different viruses in different genus, species, and families are involved or associated with those symptoms. Over the past two decades, the number and distribution of aphid-transmitted viruses (ATVs), whitefly-transmitted viruses (WTVs) has greatly increased and are responsible for considerable yield losses in cucurbit crops. WTVs are typical examples of “emerging” viruses in recent years. Cultivation of cucurbit crops in new areas specifically with different climates (climate change), are factors allowing the successful spread of WTVs in the world. The use of chemical pesticides in greenhouses can also have adverse effects on human health and the environment. High pesticide residue levels on cucurbit crops, especially in the fresh produce such as cucumber, tomato, and pepper, can endanger human health. Furthermore, pesticides can have additional adverse effects on the environment through destruction of beneficial and non target organisms such as honey bees. Therefore, an emphasis has been placed on combination with integrated pest management (IPM) strategies, such as the use of genetic resistance and/or tolerance of plant cultivars, virus-free propagative material, control weed virus hosts, insect proof netting in the greenhouses could directly benefit the cucurbit production by limiting vector populations and reducing virus spread. Furthermore there is a need for systematic monitoring for the presence of WTVs, as well as of their genetic structure and evolutionary epidemiology, which can contribute to early detection and control of WTVs, as well.Key words: Cucurbit viruses, yellowing symptoms, control methods
