In order to evaluate of rainfed bread wheat genotype’s response to nitrogen and supplemental irrigation applications, an experiment was carried out in randomized complete block design in split-split-split plot arrangement with three replications in Dryland Agricultural Research Institute (Maragheh) and Kermanshah in two cropping seasons (2018-2020). The main plots included supplemental irrigation in two levels (50 mm supplemental irrigation in planting time and 50 mm supplemental irrigation in planting time + 30 mm supplemental irrigation at the booting stage). The sub-plots included two nitrogen (N) application times (autumn N application (total) and split N; 2/3 in the autumn+1/3 topdressing at the booting stage (spring)). The sub-sub-plots included nitrogen rates; 0, 40, 80, and 120 kg N/ha, and the sub-sub-sub-plot included three bread wheat genotypes (Takab, Hoor, and Griset-16 (sup-96-18) for Maragheh and Shalan, Rizhav and DARI-16/3/HD2172/BLOUADO//AZADI/4ATTILA for Kermanshah). Data was collected for biological and grain yield, yield components, nitrogen use efficiency (NUE), water use efficiency (WUE), NDVI, vegetation covers by imaging and canopy temperature in different growth stages according to Zadok’s scale and seed quality parameters; grain protein content, Zeleny value, grain hardness, and grain starch. The results showed that the biological and grain yield were significantly (P≤0.05) higher than those in the 2nd year due to more precipitation in Maragheh. While the highest grain yield was obtained from the 2nd year in Kermanshah, although the rainfall in the first year was higher. Supplemental irrigation at two stages (50 mm) were significantly increased biological yield, grain yield, straw yield by 2975, 895, and 2069 kg/ha in Maragheh and 1450, 777, and 673 kg/ha in Kermanshah, respectively. Although the N application timings effect (total in the fall and split) was not significant on yield and yield components in both locations, the autumn N application increased grain yield 195 and 74 kg/ha in Maragheh and Kermanshah, respectively. Increasing N levels presented a significant linear response for biological yield, grain yield, and straw yield. Also, N application increased the number of spikes per m2, number of grain per spike, plant height, spike length, percentage of vegetation cover, and NDVI and decreased canopy temperature (CT). There was no significant difference between genotypes in terms of response to nitrogen application and plant properties in both experimental sites. For single irrigation at planting time (50 mm), the nitrogen requirement to obtain 90% of maximum grain yield was 60 and 70 kg N/ha Kermanshah and Maragheh, respectively. While for two irrigations (50 mm + 30 mm) N requirement was recommended 80 and 90 kg N/ha Kermanshah and Maragheh respectively in which 2/3 of N should be applied in planting time by placement method and 1/3 with the supplementary irrigation at booting stage. It could be concluded that supplemental irrigation and optimum N application could decline heat and water stress lead to improve wheat production under dryland conditions. Keywords: Nitrogen, Supplementary irrigation, Water use efficiency and Wheat genotypes
