Drought is one of the natural disasters that has caused significant annually damage in Iran. Drought, in addition to increasing its severity, continuity and extent in recent years, is the main damage to the agricultural sector. Despite several case studies in the country, these studies are mainly focused on the assessment and analysis of meteorological droughts and other types of drought, including hydrological drought and, consequently, agricultural drought have received less attention. Despite the prevalence of drought throughout the country and over the provinces, the management of drought risk has not yet been included in drought management programs in the country, and in contrast, drought is a crisis and is managed after the crisis. However, given the widespread damage caused by drought in the country, the need for comprehensive drought management is necessary and inevitable, based on forecast and risk for the country. Comprehensive drought management requires drought assessment, analysis and forecasting indicators. Although research has been conducted on various aspects of drought in the country, indicators that have been used are from the conditions of the other countries, while regional conditions and the types of data and available information is greatly reduced the precise application of these indicators in the accuracy of drought assessment and forecasting in the country. Therefore, the main purpose of this study is to evaluate and localize drought indicators for one of the main basins of the country and in accordance with local and regional conditions and available data and information to improve comprehensive risk management and drought forecasting instead of drought crisis management. For this purpose, since it was not possible to conduct research for the whole country, so Dez Basin, which is one of the main basins of the country and has several reservoir dams in operation, construction or study, was selected. It is worth mentioning that the main part of Dez Dam basin is located in Lorestan province and therefore the results of the project can be used in almost half of this province.
Also, for the implementation of this project, rainfall information, piezometric well water level, discharge of springs and rivers in different areas of the basin have been used and various indicators such as SPI, SSI, SDI (standard river flow index), SRI (Runoff standard index), PDSI (Palmer drought severity Index), SWSI (Surface Water Supply index), ADI (aggregate dryness index), NADI (normalized ADI), SWI (Standardized Water Level Index), GRI (Groundwater Resource Index) are evaluated based on these data and information and finally the the appropriate index of the basin is determined or developed.
