: Traditional knowledge is the accumulated knowledge, skills and techniques of a particular society that result from their direct interaction with the environment. This knowledge has considerable diversity and one of its important branches is the traditional forest related knowledge (TFRK). The traditional knowledge of local forest communities is the set of behaviors of forest dwellers who have lived in forest areas for a long time and make their living from forest resources. Although the study of this knowledge in the world has a relatively long history, but in Iran it has not much history. On the other hand, Zagros is the cradle of several local communities, each of which has a valuable treasure of this knowledge, so the aim of this research is to identify and record the traditional knowledge of local communities of Zagros forests in Fars, Chaharmahal and Bakhtiari, Lorestan and Kurdistan provinces. At first, the forest areas of each province were divided into strategic management units, and in each province, a strategic unit was selected as a priority strategic unit. Then, in the priority unit of each province, two common-law forest areas were considered for this research. The required information was collected using snowball sampling, key informants and purposively selective and a set of interview methods (semi-structured, unstructured interviews and life history interviews), especially with the elderly, direct observation and participatory observation were used for this purpose. Note-taking, photo-taking and video-recording were used to collect information. By combining observations and interviews with local elites, topics such as livestock systems, traditional water and soil protection systems, the exploitation and production of wood and non-wood products, and the tools used for them were recorded. In order to know the status of forest stands, the forest stands was described. Based on the results, according to the needs of local communities in the studied areas, different uses of forests were done. The most important traditional knowledges recorded are the knowledge related to the exploitation of the fruits of woody species such as Quercus spp., Amygdalus spp., pistachia spp., Crataegus spp. and Rosa spp. for food (human and animal) and medicinal purposes, traditional knowledge related to medicinal herbaceous plants such as Maticaria chamomilla, Achillea millefolium and Peganum harmala, traditional knowledge related to forest by-products such as Saqqes (gum of Pistacia atlantica) and various galls of oak trees, traditional knowledge related to the use of wood of forest trees in particular oaks for various uses in housing, fuel (firewood and coal) and tool making, traditional knowledge related to water management and soil protection and traditional knowledge related to making handicrafts and decorative products using forest resources pointed out. The results of this study confirmed that the local communities in the studied forests have a valuable treasure trove of TFRK. Continuation of this research in other forest areas of Zagros will lead to more complete results. Keywords: By-products, common-law forest areas, local communities, strategic management unit, traditional forest related knowledge, Zagros forests.
