Water hyacinth is the most important aquatic weed in the world. In less than two decades after entering Iran, this weed has become widespread in the northern aquatic habitats and is now considered the most important invasive weed in these ecosystems. Six experiments in pot conditions, natural habitat contaminated with water hyacinth and laboratory were conducted to introduce suitable herbicides for chemical control of water hyacinth and to study the genetic diversity of this weed in 2017 to 2019 at the Plant Protection Department of Rice Research Institute of Iran. In the first experiment, herbicides screening to identify effective compounds for control of water hyacinth and in the second experiment, the efficacy of recommended and twice the recommended dosage for paddy fields weed control of selected herbicides from the first experiment was investigated. In the third experiment, the efficacy of selected herbicides from the previous stage in a natural habitat contaminated with water hyacinth was investigated. The fourth experiment was performed to determine the appropriate dose of bispyribac sodium as a new and authorized herbicide for aquatic ecosystems to control water hyacinths and in the fifth experiment, the effect of autumn spraying on the wintering population of water hyacinth was studied. In the sixth experiment, the genetic diversity of water hyacinth specimens collected from Guilan and Mazandaran was investigated. The results of the first experiment showed that out of 21 herbicides studied, 14 herbicides had less than 10% efficiency in water hyacinth control. Council (triafamone + ethoxysulfuron, WG 30%) and roundup (glyphosate, SL 41%) herbicides accounted for 15 and 30 percent efficacy respectively, and nominee (bispyribac sodium OD 10%), cleanweed (bispyribac sodium SC, 40%), dialensuper (2,4-D + dicamba, SL 46.6%), U46-cambifloid (2,4-D + MCPA, SL 67.5%), and U46-difluid (2,4-D, SL 72%) had 63, 67, 78, 93, and 87 percent efficacy, respectively. The results of the second experiment confirmed the results of the first one and showed that the performance of U46-Difluid, U46-Cambiofluid, dialensuper, roundup, nominee and cleanweed herbicides at higher doses in water hyacinth control was 75, 93, 81, 93, 100 and 91%, respectively. The results of the third experiment showed that the response of water hyacinth to herbicides in natural contaminated habitats was similar to that of these herbicides in pot conditions, according to which 2, 4-D, glyphosate and bispyribac sodium are introduced as suitable herbicides to control water hyacinths. The recommended dosage for control of about 95% or more of water hyacinth from glyphosate, 2,4-D, and bispyribac sodium herbicides is 1640, 1080, and 100 g ai ha-1, respectively. Autumn spraying with herbicides has reduced the potential for overwintering of water hyacinth seedlings by more than 90 percent. Water hyacinth lacked significant genetic diversity and the origin of seedlings collected from Gilan and Mazandaran can be considered a mother plant. Among the above-mentioned herbicides, bispyribac sodium is a selective herbicide for paddy weeds and is authorized to be used in aquatic ecosystems and drinking water storage dams and has no adverse effects on fish. Therefore, based on the results of this study, bispyribac sodium (100 g ai ha-1) is recommended for the chemical control of water hyacinth because of its environmental advantagous and excellent efficacy on water hyacinth control.Key words: Invasive weed, aquatic ecosystems, overwintering, genetic diversity
