Camelthorn (Alhagi spp.) is a halophyte with accepted quantity and high quality of forage, which its forage properties are superior to cereals straw and equal alfalfa and clover. Almost all Alhagi species have high tolerance to salinity of water and soil, however, there is no complete information on tolerance levels of different species. In current research, soil properties and plant production were monitored in Alhagi maurorum Medik. rangelands, Yazd during 2019-2020. For this purpose, seven rangelands in Yazd consisted of Bafgh, Javadieh, Bahabad, Jolgeh, Ardakan, Aghda and Abarkuh were selected, in which Alhagi is dominant vegetation. Soil salinity of saturated extract (ECe) was measured at both depths in four places in each rangeland and were estimated in other 236 places using a regression line equation with apparent soil salinity, which were assessed by electromagnetic induction device (EM38). In all seven rangelands, salinity had non-uniformity distribution. Soil salinity levels varied from 3.6 dS m-1 in Aghda to 725 dS m-1 (128.8 g kg-1soil) in Ardakan for 0-30 cm soil depth and from 0.4 dS m-1 in Aghda to 366 dS m-1 (64.8 g kg-1soil) in Ardakan for 30-60 cm soil depth. Plant vegetation in general, canopy cover especially, was affected by soil salinity; which almost in all rangelands canopy cover and height, as well as, fresh and dry weight had significant relationship with soil salinity at both soil depths, especially in 0-30 cm. The highest Alhagi production, equal 25 ton ha-1 fresh weight and 7 ton ha-1 dry weight was observed in Bafgh, where water and soil salinity were 12 and 13 dS m-1, respectively. Even in the most saline conditions, Alhagi could keep the minimum growth, so that in the most saline point in Ardakan (529 dS m-1 in 0-30 cm and 260 dS m-1 in 30-60 cm) height and cover of Alhagi were 20 cm and 50%, respectively. In Aghda, canopy cover was increased by increasing in soil salinity up to 7-10 dS m-1, and then decreased. On average, the highest vegetation and production were obtained in Bafgh, Bahabad, Abarkuh, Aghda and Ardakan, which was almost matched with soil salinity and pH. According to the correlation and stepwise regression, it seems that soil pH has more effect on plant vegetation of Alhagi, especially on canopy height. It was understood when lower Alhagi vegetation was found in Aghda with less soil salinity and high pH. It seems that Alhagi has high tolerance to water and soil salinity, however, is sensitive to soil pH. EM38 device had accepted accuracy in Alhagi rangelands in Yazd province and can be recommended for other rangelands. By the way, calibration for every region using ECe in different depths as separately is necessary. Based on high salinity and drought tolerance, growth and survival of Alhagi using brackish, saline and hypersaline water resources are possible, however, its cultivation in haloculture is recommended just with saline and hypersaline water considering environmental and economic concerns. Keywords: Forage, Haloculture, Halophyte, Xerophyte.
